README file for SCORCH CD

On Windows 3.1 systems use the File Manager to locate
and double click on Readme.html in the CD's main folder.
Your default Browser should load and display the file.
In DOS use a text editor to read the text version (readme.txt)
of this file.
To display the version 1.5 illustrated Manual:

On Windows 95 & above systems use Explorer or My computer
to locate and double click on Manual.html in the CD's
main folder.
On Windows 3.1 systems use the File Manager to locate
and double click on Manual.html in the CD's main folder.
Your default Browser should load and display the file.

version of the file (scorch.doc) in the Scorch1.5 folder.
The illustrated version is not available in DOS.
To use the .mtn creation program:

This .mtn builder program may be run from the CD or copied to a
hard drive for running.
The .bmp files being converted to .mtn files must be stored
on writeable media (hard disk, floppy, etc)
On Windows 95 & above systems use Explorer or My computer
to locate the Mountain folder and then double click on Mountain.exe.
On Windows 3.1 systems use the File Manager to locate the
Mountain folder and then double click on Mountain.exe.
In DOS go to the Mountain directory then type Mountain to
start the program.
A Shortcut may be created and stored in the .bmp folder if you
do not want to go to the Mountain folder to start the program.
You will then be prompted to input the name of the .bmp
file being converted to a .mtn file.
The file name of the .bmp file must include the full path
to the file since it can not be on the CD in the Mountain.exe
folder (writable media required).
Only the name of .bmp folder needs to be entered if the
Mountain.exe file you are using is on a hard drive and in
the same folder as the .bmp file being converted.
You will be prompted to input the name of the .bmp
file being converted to a .mtn file.
The new .mtn file will be written to the same folder as
the original .bmp file.
Check the message window to see that the program ran correctly
and then close the program window.
See the readme.txt in the Mountain folder for additional
information on use of the .mtn creation program.
To Run versions of Scorched Earth:

All Scorched Earth versions can be run from the CD
The Save games & changes option will not work
when the game folder is on the CD.
On Windows 95 & above systems use Explorer or My computer
to locate the desired game folder on the CD and then double
click on the shortcut Startup to start the game.
On Windows 3.1 systems use the File Manager to locate the
desired game folder on the CD and then double click on the
batch file ScorchAR.bat to start the game. On Win 3.1 and
DOS systems the shortcut ScorchAR is not available.
In DOS go to the desired game folder on the CD and then
type ScorchAR to start the program.
The game will not run correctly if you are not in the game
folder before starting the game.
To run version 1.l on a Win 98 system you would go to the
Scorch1.1 folder and then double click on the shortcut
Startup to start the game.
The Startup Shortcut may be copied to the desktop if you want
but its Properties [read-only] will have to be deselected and
the Properties [Program [Cmd line & Working]] values will have
to be changed to include the current path of the game folder.
Warning: There may be system problems if the games are
not ended correctly.
The F1 function key should bring up the System Menu
for Scorched Earth version 1.5. The Quit option can
then be used to end the game.
The Ctrl C Key combination can be used to end all
versions of Scorched Earth.

Running from your Hard drive.
******************************************************
Place the CD in your CD drive.
Copy all of the folders except Share_W to your hard drive
To run the game use the steps described in the section:
"MENU USE INFORMATION"
(Win 3.1 or DOS) or AutoRun not enabled)
If you do not want to run all versions then you can copy
only the folders for the desired version to the hard drive.
To run the game use the steps described in the section:
"RUNNING WITHOUT USING THE MENU".
The Save games & changes option will not work until the
properties [Read-only] option of the Scorch.cfg files
has been deselected.
The following describe how to deselect the Read_only
option on a Win 95 & above systems.
Go to the folder containing the Scorch.cfg file.
Right click on the Scorch.cfg icon to display a menu.
Left click on properties to display the settings
Left click on the Read_only setting to deselect it.
Left click on Apply and then click on Close.
The following describe how to change the properties
of a program item on a Win 3.1 systems.
First locate and select the icon for the item.
Then from the File menu, choose Properties.
In the Program Item Properties dialog box,
change Attributes [Read Only] to not selected.
Finish by choosing the OK button.
The following describe how to change the properties
of a program item on a DOS systems.
To change the read only attribut you first go
to the directory containing the file.
Then type "attrib -r file-name"
You would type the following if a file named Scorch.cfg
was on drive C: in a directory named Scorch1.5.
CD \Scorch1.5
attrib -r Scorch.cfg

The speed of the version 1.1, 1.2 & 1.5 projectiles may be
change by changing the Firing Delay on the Hardware menu.
(see the manual Scorch.doc in the folders for more info)
At the end of the version 1.5 game you need to
enter an additional key stroke to remove the final display.

Sometimes a hung mouse can be started again by using
several key strokes on the keyboard.

SPECIAL NOTES FOR ENDING GAMES
******************************************
The F1 function key should bring up the System Menu

SPECIAL NOTES FOR ENDING HUNG GAMES
******************************************
Use the Ctrl Alt Del key combination to get to
the Close Program screen.
Select the SCORCHxx entry.
Then select End Task.
You should then get a window for SCORCH stating
"Windows cannot shut down the program Automatically. ....
Select the Yes option to terminate.
If SCORCH ends up on the Taskbar then
right click on it and then select close.

CD description

This CD has eight (8) folders and
eight (8) files in the main folder.

Manual |
Each Folder has a readme.txt file containing information
concerning folder content.
The Manual folder has a html version of the 1.5 User Manual.
The Mountain folder has the program needed to convert graphic
files to .mtn format. It also has a folder containing some
sample mountain files that can be converted to .mtn files.
These files were created by a digital camera and will have
to be converted to 16 color .bmp files before they can be
used by the convert program.
(see the Mountain folder readme.txt file for more information).
The Scorch1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.5 & 1.2 Spanish folders have the data
and program files need to run the different Scorch versions.
The file Scorch.doc in each folder is the user manual for that
version of Scorch. The user manual may be read with any text editor.
The Share_W folder contains expanded and .zip copies of Shareware
version of Scorched Earth 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 & 1.5.
The registered versions of the game should not be copied and shared
with non-registered friends. The shareware versions in the Share_W
folder may be copied and shared with your friends who have not registered.
VerDate.txt is a file containing a creation date identifier for this CD.
ScorchAR is the Shortcut used to start the Menu batch file.
ScorchAR.bat is the batch file used to run the Menu.
Scorch.ico is the ico used by shortcut ScorchAR.
Readme.htm is the html version of this file.
Readme.txt is a text version of this file.
Getkey.exe is the routine used by ScorchAr.bat
to get the keyboard input for the Menu.
The autorun.inf is the AutoRun starting entry.
